The Last Union County Farm

Mr. Peterson thanks so much for the opportunity to document your farm truly a diamond in the ruff. One of the things I remember growing up in Plainfield is asking my grandmother who let the “cows out” and where did they come from. She replied they are probably from the farm we’re going to pick the eggs up for breakfast. Of course a young teenager didn’t think twice about a farm in Plainfield. Heck Jersey has nothing but farms. This one has been here through two centuries hmm. While Mr. Peterson has since retired from farming and living in his childhood home he is just as generous and gentle as one can be. For those of you who never met Mr. Peterson you might notice his handy work that he and his family did along the sort cut to Terrill Road that is Watchung Ave.

29.2 On A Flat!

Unbelievable! Lisa P, a member of the NJ Major Taylor cycling club said she turned her computer over so she wouldn’t lose concentration.
At first is was a nice easy 14-16 mph pace from the start of the 23rd annual Sea Gull Century, but after the first rest stop the pace jumped up to 17-19 Mph. This was a nice brisk pace and the team was together til the second rest stop. Shortly thereafter, the surge jumped to 21,23,25,26,29+ all the way to Assateague Island. All you heard was “on your left” every few seconds as the train of 30+ club members in a double pace line passed other cyclists along the route.

Before we left the island Club president James McCarthur did a head count and began to lead the peloton off the island. On our way out we acknowledge the Assateague Ponies grazing and cyclists gawking and grabbing picture of them.

Even though we were generally happy about our ride to the island, and as much as McCarthur was eager to get the team back to the 22+ pace for the last 35 miles. But there was dissension shortly after our departure. Mother nature felt neglected that she wasn’t invited in on the fun. So she decided to blow in with her 20mph+ cross and head winds and gusts up to 35mph. Needless to say the Major Taylor’s and the other 7500+ cyclists were outrage by her participation. We fussed and cursed her for the 3+ hours to the finish line. Some like myself would have rather climbed hills and mountains rather than fight her winds. Lisa and sharon thanks for the photo assistance.

But more than unbelievable was how four women and two men plus a couple of pick-ups along the way rode the road to the ride on their bikes from Flemington, N.J., to Ocean City, MD 2 days 190+ miles plus the Sea Gull Century. I’m inspred!

Pedal, Pedal, Pedal

Just got my bike and decided to take a challenge ride from Trenton to Somerset no sooner than I got on my way during a cool October morning did I hear Hey mann!!, Bro stop hold up, lemme holla at you a minute coming from down the block. When I heard lemme holla at you a minute. I knew this was a cash call. So I did my best to act like I didn’t hear em’. My ears were covered, had the Ipod going on. I was trying to make my date in Somerset. But the caller kept getting louder and louder and if weren’t for the red light I’d would have kept going.

Being the gentile giant that I am I gave in to the plea. Najee was so excited to talk to me he began to tell me all about the black cycling team in Trenton. Well little did Najee know that I was looking for folks to ride with. Najee, Najee, Najee I luv to mannn!!!. Thanks so much for introducing me to Matt Rawls. I gained so much experience from him. The next week team member Travis Harper picked me up and took me over Matt’s house and introduced me to coach troy, Oh the pain!!. If that wasn’t enought the next day or so the team took me to Poor Farm Road, mind as well had been the Alps. Why would they inflict so much cruel and unusual punishment to a new cyclist? I didn’t break any laws.

But the pain wasn’t over when I got to the top mountain. Barely able to breath, move, talk, or drink water. My legs and lungs were burning they had the audacity to come up with another beat-down, “the last man doesn’t get no rest” and they took off w/o mercy. The only good news is they said don’t worry Brian we’re on our way back. But not before two more #@$% mountains. I had attempted to get off the loop but since I didn’t know where I was so being SOL was an understatement.

Over the past eight months I have gotten a little stronger and have been enjoying the rides. Our last ride was truly a good one, mostly flat with a tiny climb. We raced and chased and I was not the last man to the line so I got some rest. Travis, Matt, Heikke, Rupert, John, Jake, Troy, Arthur, Pete, Dan, Michelle, Romy, Stephanie, Burnell, Monique, Najee, Keith, Knapps, Cilfford, and Sherron thanks so much for your love and support. Pedal, pedal, pedal.

“If You Know it Show it”

At 18 or so I tried to do the “Hustle”, “Running Man” and “Roger Rabbit” but with two left feet I found it difficult to keep in rhythm. So I just perfected the “Electric Slide” with my grandmother at the family get-to-gethers. Well if you permit me to fast forward to age 40+ I was heading to a work out session at the local gym and heard the song “Jazzy Lady” playing off in the distance in one of the back rooms. So I poked my head inside to see what was going on. To my surprise folks were dancing, stepping, dipping, turning, sliding with so much rhythm and coordination I became intrigued and wanted to join in. That’s when I discovered they were doing soul line dancing. They made it look so easy. “Somebody say too easy.” After the dance concluded I asked if I could sit in on the next one before my weight training class. The instructor invited me in, but cautioned we’re doing “Sakeem”, an easy dance but tricky dance. So like every new dance, they’ll show it then they teach it. “Sakeem”. A simple, fast pace and agile dance: Kick and cross, kick and cross, kick and cross, kick, kick, kick, (kick and cross?) 3/4 turn. As Kenny J of I am Kenny Johnson Productions began the dance he said don’t worry if you mess up. “Just do you and I’ll do me.” And if you know it show it. The dance was going good until I got to the step 3/4 turn and a third foot showed up under my other left foot. Needless to say the dancer next to me took pity and reminded me about my weight training class. Well I came back the next week for the beginner’s class and started learning the basic steps. I can’t thank Kenny J and the class enough for making my time in Trenton memorable and enjoyable.
I’m looking forward to seeing Darren, Step Kenny, and the gang in August for the annual symposium. Never knew line dancing could be so much fun. “Slide to left, wobble, hitch hike, charlie brown, and freeze.”

The State Capitol

Recently I heard from a long time sweet-heart of a friend, As we been “playing” catch up over the last couple of weeks, B was kind of enough to point out the gap in my blog. After fumbling through a few thoughts I finally fessed’ I really hadn’t picked up my camera to shoot much in the past six weeks. I’ve been distracted with contracts, moving, cycling,“Image block” and bunch of other good and bad life stuff that shall go unspoken at this time.

Well to get back on track B, in all her infinite wisdom, suggested I write about my time in “Tren’in” Boy did the lightbulb go off. B thanks so much for your inspiration.

From the “Killing Fields” to the Trenton whale. My first assignment for the AP, after leaving Delaware, was some big deal gig at Newark Airport. I was greeted warmly from Mr. humble pie, Mr. never quit, Mr.never, give up, Mr. defy all circumstances Dith Pran welcoming me to the Big-Time. Pran I love you and miss u old friend.

My last job with the AP was tracking the lost Beluga whale that hung out in the Delaware River for over a week. Next to boxing in Atlantic City this was one of my better assignments. For at least four days whale watchers lined the shores from Trenton to Burlington and until it passed my territory of the Delaware Memorial Bridge heading out to sea.

STEM WOC Conclave

leave a comment »

Stem Women of Color Conclave went off without of hitch. Organizers Carmen Rivera and her team I can’t thank enough for the honor a privilege to document their meeting once more. My team and I got to the Conclave friday afternoon and scouted out the scene. Besides the Sun Dial social we just had one other room to cover . The lighting was a little tricky and couldn’t shoot to slow cause the room was spinning and not only was the sweet light was great but rising and setting every few minutes!! Hum Sun Dial!. Well glad that was only one night.
Well the next day we got to the Conclave just time for the last scoop of cheesy grits. Friday night when we checked the meeting room the light was what is was tungsten here, fluorescent there and daily when the doors opened. Well we decided to strobe the speakers for the first few minutes and again during the q/a and available on the audience. Well of course the house video folks had something else in mind. Dim the house spot the speaker and flash over easy. Err!!! The Sun Dial wasn’t looking too bad at this time. Well we made through the first speaker ok. Then walked in Cathy Hughes for the Keynote. ” She wasn’t playing that Dim Sum”
Her opening remarks Please turn up the house lights I can’t see in here or was it why is it so dark in here. In either case the lights came up and and we were happy people. Thanks Ms Hughes the lights were a full power for the rest of the session. Please be on the look out for my card, email, phoner, door knock, or run down.
Ms. Hughes, Drs. Blackman, Javanoc, Mack. Ong, Rockquemore, Taylor, Rankins and others thank you for hipping me to your mark and contributions to the world. Omar and Hodge what Can I say. still tight after 30 years

Atlanta

Well finally made it back to the ATL after 20 years. boy did it grow up! it even got a little hotter. Well after 9 hours of shooting the STEM women of color conclave I didn’t have enough punishment so I went out to Centennial park to try make one of those neat fotos other folks made over the years. Well it was well worth the beat down from earlier in the day. children from 2-50 were enjoying themselves in the fountain. little boys punching the streams of water, little girls dancing in the bursts and parents trying not to get wet. Well I guess once you’re near the water it’s kind of hard to stay dry-ya think. Well the highlight of day was when Joe Cool, Peety,Rin Tin Tin, Harvey, Buck, Blue and their owner strolled through unannounced.

Out for dinner

leave a comment »

Well our dinner club met last  Saturday night at Warm Daddy’s in Philadelphia and once again a great choice.  Although 10p was a little late to eat the food, service and entertainment was well worth the wait.  We had the privilege of  being entertained with live music from Gordon Chambers. An amazing talented artist as well as his musicians.   Mr. chambers was putting out hit after hit and even having the audience get involved.  The no singing at the table rule did not apply to the folks in the restaurant that night. I would like to thank my good friends of the dinner club for picking a wonderful spot and having a good time.  And Mr. Chambers who knew “I Apologize” would be one of your biggest hits.  Keep up the good work.
